XPday London

Building Software That Matters

Session title: Building software that matters

Submitter: Gojko Adzic

Abstract:

This will be a group workshop on ideas, practices, tools and principles that help us focus development effort on things that really matter and deliver value efficiently with software. Workshop topics will include:

  • eliminating waste in software development
  • providing focus in scope/specifications
  • providing visibility of business goals to developers and development progress to business
  • testing ideas and confirming that they work or don't work

The introduction to the workshop will be based on a related workshop at AltNetUK 09 and the participants will then work in groups focusing on one of the topics.

Timeline

Duration is flexible. Can be 45, 60 or 90 minutes. I can even run it for longer if needed. For a 60 minute duration, this is the timeline:

  1. 00:00-10:00 - Introduction, brief update on the altnetuk workshop and the results of that.
  2. 10:00-25:00 - group brainstorm, gathering topics for discussion and workshop ideas
  3. 25:00-55:00 - workshop, participants working in groups discussing and focusing on a particular area
  4. 55-00-60:00 - each group presents results

what kind of person you would expect to be interested in your session and what benefit they would likely gain form attending?

Anyone serious about delivering value with software. I guess it will be most interesting to mid-level and senior developers and managers. They will learn about common issues with software deliverables, gain more visibility in what others are doing to improve the effects of software deliverables and ideas how to improve their own process. Also get a chance to discuss their particular problems and issues with peers and get ideas for possible improvements.

any prerequisites for attendees to get full value

none really
