Evolving from Scrum to Lean
Format
Experience Report
Intended Audience
Open-minded leaders who are interested in broadening the set of process tools they can use on a software project, or would just like to see things from a different perspective.
Abstract
We began a long project at the BBC using Scrum, and as we continued to retrospect we began to find aspects of the behaviour needed to follow the 'rules' of Scrum that seemed to us to be wasteful.
By forgoing dogmatic adherence to these rules, and focusing our retrospectives on changing our most wasteful practices, we evolved a much more productive and enjoyable way of working together, which more closely resembles a 'Lean' or Kanban process than the Scrum process we started out with.
We'd like to describe the journey we went on, the thinking and principles that guided our choices, as well as some concrete tools and techniques that helped us along the way and could help you too, if you chose to make this journey.
